WhatsApp template categories (Marketing, Utility, Authentication) and why they matter
Every WhatsApp message template is classified as Marketing, Utility, or Authentication. The category affects cost, review, and allowed content.
When you create a WhatsApp message template in Omnifox, Meta requires you to pick a category. It's not a cosmetic detail: the category determines how the message is billed, what criteria the content is reviewed against, and in some cases whether the recipient can receive it outside the 24-hour window.
The 3 categories
- Marketing — promotions, announcements, offers, content that invites commercial action. This category gets the strictest content review.
- Utility — updates about an existing transaction (order confirmations, shipping notices, appointment reminders). Built for following up on something the customer already started.
- Authentication — one-time codes (OTP) to verify identity or log in.
Where to pick it
Under Channels → [your WhatsApp channel] → Templates → New template, the category field is required before submitting the template for Meta's review.
Example
A template saying "Your order #1234 has shipped" falls under Utility. A template saying "20% off this weekend" falls under Marketing, even if the tone reads similarly.
Tips
- Picking the wrong category (say, marking a promotion as Utility) can get it reclassified by Meta or rejected outright.
- Carousel templates (with product cards) are only accepted under the Marketing category.
Troubleshooting
If Meta changed your template's category without you requesting it, it detected the content actually matched a different category — review the copy and adjust it, or accept the reclassification if the send is still valid for your use case.
